Solid Wood Furniture Versus Veneer

Some makers use both types of construction in building custom furniture and custom cabinets. Now lets look at these two options and their strong and weak points.

Solid wood furniture, this means all exposed parts are made of the same species of all natural wood, with no other materials included, such as plywood or particle board.

Advantages of Solid Wood:

Practical. The durability of solid wood furniture is high on the list. Scratches, dings, dents, water marks, stains can all be repaired. Obviously, the worse the damage the more expensive, but it is certainly easier and less expensive than veneer furniture.

Disadvantages of Solid Wood:

Split. When exposed to extreme atmospheric conditions, solid wood furniture will expand or contract, and may split along the grain of the wood. Some makers use a “floating case system” in which table and case-piece surfaces are attached using a bracket method or elongated holes for screws to slide. This enables furniture to respond to environmental changes without damage. As a rule, though, avoid exposing pieces to strong sunlight or direct heat sources.

Good quality veneer furniture will have a solid core and the legs, posts, doors or drawer fronts will be straight-grain solid wood.

Advantages of Veneer:

Beautiful. The best, most interesting logs are cut into veneer. This is largely an economic decision–sellers and veneer makers can make more money from a high quality log sliced into veneer than they can from sawing it into boards. And certain cuts, such as burls, are structurally unsound in ‘the solid’. These beautiful woods can rarely be utilized unless they’re sliced into veneer

Environmentally kind. Saw timber is typically sawn into 1″ thick boards. The saw cuts a kerf between boards 1/4″ thick that winds up as sawdust. Veneer is not cut from the log but sliced with a knife (like lunch meat) into 1/32″ leaves or sheets. That produces 32 veneer surfaces for every 1 that is gotten from a board and with no wood wasted as sawdust another 8 sheets where the saw blade would have gone. That’s 40 surfaces of wood veneer for every 1 of solid wood.

Creates new design possibilities. Since veneer is so thin and is glued to a stable

Stable. Since veneer is glued to a stable substrate it produces surfaces not prone to warp or splitting or seasonal movement.

Substrates. Plywood and medium density fiberboard, the substrates used for some furniture, are made from low quality trees. This means a market is provided the landowner for these trees. This leads to better forests over time since the trees remaining grow better and faster with less competition for resources. Its like weeding your garden only a lot bigger.

Disadvantages Veneer:

Thin. This is more of a problem for the builder than the buyer. Sand-through in preparation for finishing is ‘touching the third rail’ of woodworking. Such pieces are almost impossible to repair and frequently involve ‘re-design’ (as in cutting off the sanded through area) or making a speculative, difficult repair which can be difficult to hide. Once the piece is completed thickness of the veneer is of no concern.

We at Berkshire Furniture believe that there are good in both kinds. It all depends on who is the manufacturer and how it is built. When buying your piece of furniture, always ask if it is real wood veneers or laminated imitation of wood. If the surface of table top or any wood case top looks Perfect and unreal, then it is most probably not a wood veneer. Pores, scuffs and wood knots can be easily found even on wood veneers if the veneer comes from wood. These pores, nicks and scuffs are the signature of nature and proves to the buyer that yes, this is a slice of real wood that is veneered over this top.

Reupholstering Simple Dining Chairs

After many years of being sat upon, the chairs around the table often become ugly as their padding wears out. Nothing is quite as embarrassing to a home owner as realizing that his or her guests must sit on chairs with the stuffing coming out. This problem can be remedied, however, with a little time and some simple, inexpensive items from the local fabric and hardware stores.

Turn your chairs over, and you might notice that the fabric covering the chair is stapled in place. By removing the fabric, you’ve made the first step. This can be done by removing the staples, or by cutting the fabric around the staples.

Next, measure the dimensions of the chairs for the fabric to use as covering. When buying the fabric, choose a durable fabric that is relatively easy to clean. Also, make sure to leave at least an extra foot for each side of the chair. This ensures that there is enough fabric to fit over the padding and enough to be anchored to the bottom of the chair. It’s better to have too much than not enough. You can always trim the excess.

Choose padding that is durable as well. Foam padding works well. Most large fabric and craft specialty shops sell padding that is especially designed for upholstery. A little extra padding is a good idea for each of the chairs as well.

After buying the supplies (don’t forget to buy a staple gun and staples at the hardware store—a clerk should be able to help you find what you need), trace a pattern, using the chairs, on some good poster board. This pattern will be used to properly cut out the padding.

Using a pencil, and the pattern, trace a guide on the padding. As you cut the padding into the proper shape for placement on the chairs, it is a good idea to leave half an inch to an inch. When the fabric is pulled tight over the padding and chairs, the extra will ensure that the entire seat is covered.

Next, place the fabric, design side down, spread out on the floor. Place the padding in the middle of the fabric. Next, match the seats of the chairs to the padding. Bring up the sides, so that they are ready to be stapled to the underside of the chairs. The task can be made easier with help. Pull the fabric tight, but not so tight that there isn’t any give, and staple the fabric. Trim any excess fabric.

Finally, turn the chairs right-side up and place them around the table. It looks like a fresh new room, and you did it by yourself!

How to Choose Slipcovers for Your Modern Sofa or Chair

Slipcovers are great protection for your modern sofa. They can easily defend your sofa from stains and damage. Many homeowners choose to don their sofas or chairs with slipcovers especially if they have pets or children in the house. Slipcovers also take some load of maintenance and cleaning duties. Since they are the ones subject to stain, all you need is to slip them off the sofa, wash them, wipe the sofa and slip back on when their dry. Here are some tips when choosing on for your furniture.

Decide on the style

Before buying the slipcover for your modern sofa, make sure you know that this addition is geared more towards aesthetic than function. If you’re trying to conceal sofa damage, slipcovers definitely cannot help much. So moving on, decide on the style you want. With the number of designs available, it’s easy to get confused. If you want a calmer and more relaxed feel, choose a casual style. Consider the design of your room and be sure to go along with it.

Choose the fabric weight

There are several kinds of fabrics but not all are considered good slipcovers. If you’re thinking about a great balance for your modern sofa, opt for a lighter fabric. Velvet is considered heavy, and as such, don’t usually compliment the sofa or the room. A good rule of the thumb is to always choose a light-to-medium weight slipcover.

Choose fabric texture and weave

While choosing the weight of the fabric is important, don’t forget to choose the right texture as well. Again, don’t forget to go in harmony with your room’s design. If you’re going for a more early Victorian look with a modern twist, damask is excellent. For solely modern designs, denim is great.

In addition, also remember to choose the right fabric weave. A good slipcover is made from tightly woven fabric. The tightness of the weave is effective in covering the fabric of the sofa underneath.

Pick the right length

If you don’t want your slipcovers to easily soil, choose those that don’t reach the floor. In fact, it’s recommended for slipcovers to not to reach the floor when donned on the soda. You even have the option of adding a skirt to change the look of the slipcover or enhance its style.

Don’t forget the shape

Lastly, don’t forget the shape of your modern sofa. Make sure that the slipcovers will fit the sofa once you put them on the furniture.
